The Oil and Gas activities in Niger Delta would not be complete without Abia State as one of the major contributors. A year after the discovery of Oil in Olobiri in now Bayelsa State in 1957, a huge deposit of Oil and Gas were discovered at multiple areas in Abia State, notable till date are: Ukwa West, Ukwa East and Ugwunagbo Local Government Areas. Of these discoveries, full oil and gas development only commenced, and is still producing in Ukwa West because of its significant un-interruptive productive operations at Owaza Community.
An environmental research group -Foundation for Environmental Rights, Advocacy & Development (FENRAD, in collaboration with the Federal Government, carry out an assessment and articulate exercise in 2008 to identify all the cap crude Oil and Gas wells including their Communities within Abia State. The aftermath of this exercise brought the record of cap wells with Christmas trees to one hundred and five (105) in twenty (20) host Communities domiciled in Ukwa West, Ukwa East and Ugwunagbo Local Government Areas of Abia State.
